Discovering The History Of Raleigh NC
Raleigh is a city that is located in North Carolina and is famous for some of the colleges and excellent food. However, for some people they know Raleigh a little bit different and that is because of the history of the region. By knowing the history of the region it is rather easy for people to see just how important this town has been in North Carolina and to be able to differentiate between what is seen as local lore and what is the truth for the town.
The city was established as the capital of North Carolina in the year of 1792 because of how central it was to the rest of the state. However, the history of the city starts with the establishment of a search committee for the land the state would need in 1788. The land would be purchased from one of the original settlers in the area Joel Lane. Lane would later go on, after the courthouse and jail were constructed in front of his home, to open up a tavern and even a church to help in getting the founding of the city established. Lane would also go on to construct a church in the log house style.
The design of the capital city would follow a fairly well-set plan that was developed by William Christmas. Christmas saved Capital Square, which was known as Union Square at the time, for the capital building. From the capital building all the streets would radiate from it. However, what is interesting is the city would have the streets at least eight of them radiating from the capital and they would all be named after the prominent city in the district the street was representing.
The city would undergo three devastating fires in the 1800s, with the last one in 1831 destroying the state capital building. The state capital building would be rebuilt and its completion would be celebrated with parades in the streets. However, the commercial development of this region of the state was slow until the middle of the 1800s when two rail lines finally reached Raleigh.
During the War Between The States, Raleigh was fairly sympathetic to the Union cause. However, they did keep spirits high and even celebrated the succession of the state. This would not spare the city from being conquered by Sherman, though in 1865.
Raleigh would go through a resurgence period after the war and a lot of the city would be built up again. However, it would be until 1920 before the population would finally top the 20,000 mark. It was also at that time period the utilities became markedly better and allowed for more industry to move into the city.
Learning the history of any city is interesting. However, for some people they will find it is very difficult to find the proper history of a city or even know its significance. By knowing the history of Raleigh, it will be easier for people to know this is a city that is very important in history, but also in the state of North Carolina.
